This play was written by Johann Nestroy, Austria's most famous playwright and one of the giants of German-language theatre, and translated by HMS director Dale Coye specifically for this production.
In the play, four very different families share an apartment building in Old Vienna, and each family an example of one of the old medieval temperaments: sanguine (cheerful), melancholic, choleric (angry), and phlegmatic. The son of each family has fallen in love with the daughter across the hall, but the fathers have other marriage plans for their daughters. In desperation the young people decide to elope, but Klipps, the barber, reveals the plan to the fathers. They're caught in the act, but the action spins faster and faster in a hilarious second act.
This play was performed at High Mowing in 2006 to great acclaim. For this version, songs from the comic operas of the French composer Jacques Offenbach have been added. It's one of the funniest plays ever written, and is appropriate for all ages.
