Musical Child Classes 2013
New Class this Fall: Musical Child Music and Play!
Last year’s class was so much fun that I decided to extend one class this year for those of you who would like to stay awhile and connect with other parents after the music class. We will have the same 45-minute class, followed by a 45-minute play and conversation session. Some possible topics of conversation include parenting, Waldorf education, and early childhood music development, but we will develop a list of topics together as a group.
Wednesdays: Music class only: 11:00-11:45, September 18-November 20
Fridays, Music and Play 8:30-10:15, September 20-November 22
Musical Child Class Description
The Musical Child is a music and movement program for children ages 0 to 5 years old and their parents or caregivers. In the 45-minute class, we sing, dance, play rhythm instruments, play with rhythmic nursery rhymes and rhythm chants, in a developmentally-appropriate setting. The focus is on providing children with a fun, musically-rich environment in which they are free to explore the elements of music in their own way, according to their own developmental time-table.
This program was developed by Nancy Wight for her master’s thesis in the Waldorf teacher training program at Antioch University. It combines traditional folk melodies and children’s songs, singing games, movement and dance with seasonal nature themes to create a curriculum for parent/child, nursery and kindergarten classes. Nancy plays her flute and guitar in the classes and occasionally brings in other instruments for an instrument “petting zoo.”

As a Music Together® teacher and center director, she developed a center in Massachussets providing family music and movement classes to over 200 families. She became a master teacher, and helped train Music Together teachers around the U.S and Canada for seven years. She studied music education and piano performance at Westminster Choir College, and recently received her M.Ed. from Antioch University New England, completing the Waldorf teacher training program. In addition, Nancy completed the Suzuki Piano Level 1 training, and teaches private piano lessons.
