The rhythm of the year, a sense of reverence for the world, and wisdom and beauty apparent in its formation are cultivated and celebrated at Pine Hill throughout the year. Christmas, Easter and other Christian festivals are celebrated. Jewish festivals and other ceremonies from a wide range of religious and philosophical backgrounds are also celebrated in the classrooms.
The festival of Michaelmas, in which children experience the image of good overcoming evil in the reenactment of the hero slaying the dragon, is often celebrated with an assembly, a procession with shields and banners, the planting of bulbs, and an outdoor picnic with games and events following.
Kindergarten children attend an Advent Garden on the first Sunday of Advent. On December 6, St. Nicholas pays a quick and mysterious visit to each class room, leaving small gifts behind. On December 12, St. Lucia Day is celebrated. The second graders dressed in white, visit each class with songs and a cookie for everyone.
The winter holiday season is celebrated in many ways, with concerts, with "Gathering of Light," a medieval Christmas play and an annual Holiday Fair. These events are an opportunity for the whole community to celebrate together, and share the school with others.
